Our Mission The Mission of the Colleton County High School Library Media Program is to support the curriculum of Colleton County High School, and as part of that mission to provide access to current, adequate, and appropriate information resources. The learning resource program empowers students and educators to become effective users of information and ideas, while fostering the appreciation of literature. The graduate professional library media specialists assisted by the trained support staff collects, purchases, organizes, makes accessible, and maintains materials in many formats. These resources reflect the students', faculty's and staff's, educational, cultural and recreational information needs. Vision To assist all of our users to acquire the skills to become effective users of information. Goals To provide physical access to information through the careful selection of learning resources in all formats. To provide intellectual access to information through the integration of information literacy skills into all areas of the curriculum. To provide diverse learning experiences that promote responsible citizenship in a democracy. The Colleton County High School Library Media Center serves a student body of over 1800 students with a fully automated library system. The electronic catalog runs on Follett software. We use the electronic database DISCUS to provide access to general online encyclopedias from Grolier Online; full-text topical resources from SIRS/ProQuest; a NewsBank newspaper database; and a number of Thomson Gale magazine, newspaper and reference databases. The LMC has 27 computer workstations for student use. There are over 15,000 books available in the LMC as well as several print newspaper and magazine subscriptions. Teachers may schedule time for classes to visit the LMC or students may come to do research or locate books independently. Students are invited and encouraged to use the Media Center. Student behavior should reflect an atmosphere conducive to learning. Hours: 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM [4:00 PM on Fridays.] Passes: · Not required before and after school. · Required for individual students at other times during the day including lunch. · Present pass at the circulation desk when entering the media center. No food, drink, gum, or candy is allowed in the Media Center. Computer Use: · Users must have a signed Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) on file in the Media Center to use a computer. Click HERE to see a student AUP. · Users are required to log in and out at the main desk when using computers. · Non-instructional e-mail is allowed only before and after school or with permission. · Non-instructional chat room, forum, or electronic bulletin board participation is not permitted at any time without permission. · On-line or computer games are not permitted at any time without permission. · Streaming video, unless instructional, is not permitted without permission. · Printing for schoolwork: first 5 pages per day, no charge; students need permission from library staff to print additional or duplicate pages. Without permission: 10¢/ page. · Printing for personal: 10¢/ page in black & white, 25¢/ page in color. · Classes have priority for computer use throughout the school day. · Individual students with school assignments have priority before and after school. Circulation Policy: · Books: Limit of 3 for two weeks plus one renewal. Materials may be renewed again if no one has requested them. · Reference books will not be circulated. · Overdue books fees: $.05 per day · Lost book fee: replacement cost of the book · Damaged book fee: cost determined by media center staff Copier: A [b&w] copier is available for student use @ $.10/page.
